Diabetes test strips are one of the essential components of an effective diabetes and blood glucose level monitoring system.

Diabetes test strips, also known as glucose test strips or glucometer test strips are special pieces of chemically treated paper that react to glucose in the blood. Typically the way it works is that the strip will turn to a particular color depending on the levels of blood glucose present.

The diabetic test strip is then fed into a meter which determines, based on the color or shade of the strip, translates the information into numbers which represent your blood glucose level.

Test Strips For Diabetes Are Not One Size Fits All

Diabetic test strips are not interchangeable. They are made to work with specific models and machines. Therefore, diabetic test strips made for an Omron monitor will not necessarily work with a LifeScan monitor, and vice versa.

Buying Diabetes Test Strips Cheap

Test strips for diabetes can be expensive. Depending on the severity of your diabetes, you may have to check your glucose levels multiple times a day. And each time you need to use a new diabetes strips. Cumulatively, this can really add up over the course of a month.

That's why, when pricing a glucose monitor, also look at the price of the test strips. The lowest cost monitor is not necessarily the best buy. Of course, you want to get the most accurate results from your glucose monitor. So you want one that is accurate.

But, all things being equal, once you narrow down the type of monitor you will buy, you should next price the cost of the diabetes testing strips to determine how expensive or cheap it will really be.

Diabetic testing strips also go bad - which means that they will give inaccurate results. And, sometimes the prices on a batch of strips will be low because they are near or past their expiration date.

Sometimes cheap diabetic test strips are cheap for a reason. Make sure that the place you are purchasing your strips from are not selling you strips that are defective, or near their shelf life expiration date. As a double check, always verify the expiration date on the strips that you get. If they are near the expiration date refuse them or send them back.

Free Diabetes Test Strips

If you are on Medicare, you are in luck. It will allow you to get many medical supplies free or at low cost.

If you have Medicare Part B, you will be able to get free diabetic test strips up to a certain amount. Specifically, if you use insulin for your diabetes, you can get up to 100 free diabetes test strips a month. If you do not use insulin, you will be limited to 100 free diabetic test strip every 3 months.

In order for you to get the diabetes test strips free, however, you will have to visit a pharmacy or supplier that is enrolled in Medicare. If you go to one that is not in the Medicare system, you will have to pay for the diabetic strips yourself. And you will not be reimbursed.
